Catherine and Jacob had me fly out to the White Lakes, a couple of hours from Ottawa, and it didn’t disappoint. I’d never seen eagles circling overhead or raccoons casually wandering about before, so that alone felt worth the trip. Canada does scenery in a way that makes you feel very small, but in the best possible sense.

The real highlight, though, was the mix of people. The UK crowd and the Canadian lot got on famously, with plenty of banter flying both ways. It gave the whole celebration a proper warmth, like two families meeting for the first time and immediately taking the mick out of each other.
